Botanical Paper Works Magic! 4 Steps to Make It!
Why is Botanical Paper Important?
Botanical paper works magic! Since centuries, wood has been the backbone of the paper making industry. A large portion of forest cover is cleared every day in order to meet paper and paper product requirements. Softwood coniferous trees such as spruce and pine are common natural resources that are manufactured into paper.
The primary effect of this mindless production of paper is deforestation. In addition, it also leads to accumulation of large scale paper waste in landfills. Today, paper pollution produced at an alarming rate from all sectors of the society has proved to be a serious ecological concern.
As years passed by, masses started becoming more aware of the consequences that constant tree felling had on the planet. This increasing awareness of negative repercussions led to the boom of more mindful and ethical choices. Thus, audiences began switching to products that were more sustainable and created minimum impact on the resources of the earth.
In terms of the paper making industry, handmade paper started becoming more popular. This kind of paper is made by shredding old, used and unused paper and then handmaking it into new paper. This method was driven by the concept of zero waste which was practised widely by environmentalists.
Pepaa makes hand made paper products. Shop here In spite of all these efforts, only 5% of the paper that is made worldwide is made from waste. The rest of the 95% still depends on wood pulp, which means continued felling on innocent trees.
But is there a way that we can save our luscious forest cover without compromising on our paper requirements? Yes, there is!
Pepaa takes immense pride in bringing an unusual yet incredible type of paper to India. Its 100% handmade, recycled, organic, biodegradable. To add to that, it’s even plantable. Yes, you heard us right. Its plantable. We call it Seed Paper or Botanical Paper.
Pepaa makes plantable seed paper. Shop here How is Botanical Paper made?
All the paper waste that leads to paper pollution is embraced with open arms by Pepaa. Every last bit of this paper waste is turned into beautiful handmade and recycled paper. This paper is naturally off white in color and has an extremely fine looking, earthy texture. If off white is not your color, worry not. Our eco friendly botanical paper can be dyed into a range of nature friendly water based colors. Thus, all our materials and activities promote the message of zero waste and sustainability.
But making a product out of waste wasn’t our only goal. We believed in doing our bit for the deteriorating nature. We believed in giving back to our selfless planet. We believed in filling the world with fresh, green saplings that grow into tall, strong trees. And we wanted to do exactly that.
We achieved this by embedding hand picked seeds into the botanical paper. These seeds enabled the organic paper to return back into mother earth in the form of magical plants.
Does botanical paper really work?
Botanical paper is paper with seeds embedded in it – as simple as that! Does it really work? Absolutely! Plant it in the same way you plant seeds – the paper will turn into sludge and decompose, and the seeds will grow into plants! The equation is really simple: More seed paper – less paper waste, and more flowers/vegetables for the environment.
What is plantable seed paper, i.e., botanical paper?
Plantable Seed Paper is a biodegradable eco-paper that is made with post-consumer textile wastes (yes, made from cotton and not virgin paper – so no trees harmed!) and embedded with exotic seeds of flowers and vegetables (sometimes even trees!). When the paper is planted in a pot of soil, the seeds grow and the paper decomposes and forms manure.
How long does Botanical Seed Paper last?
Botanical paper can grow even if 5 or 6 years old, but typically the germination rates start to decline after 3 or 4 years. However, at Pepaa, we recommend that you use the plantable seed paper within one year of purchase. Keeping the seed paper in a cool place will improve germination capacity rather than keeping it in a hot environment.
How to Make Botanical Paper?
Step 1: Gather Paper or Post-Consumer Textile Wastes, and put it into a blender.
Step 2: Pour some water and blend it into pulp.
Step 3: Put some seeds into the pulp, stir and strain the mix.
Step 4: Spread the pulp onto a mesh, flatten it and then keep it out to dry.
Step 5: Your plantable seed paper is ready for use!How to plant the botanical paper?
1.Soak the seed paper overnight, or for 2-3 days.
2.Let the seeds sprout.
3.Cut the plantable seed paper into pieces and then cover with soil (1cm deep).
4.Water it every day.

90% of Humans Will Die in 31 Years [Climate Change Emergency]
2050.
The end of the world has been the stuff of legend – movies have been made, soothsayers have predicted it, and now the judgment has officially been passed.
In another 31 years, 90% of mankind will be annihilated by climate change, says Australia’s Breakthrough National Centre for Climate Restoration (BNCCR).
That means in 31 years, most of us will likely be dead.
This is following up on the news that world leaders heard in the General Assembly earlier this year about the climate change emergency –
“Only 11 years is all that remains to stop irreversible damage from climate change.”
Climate emergency is true and staring us in the face.
11 years to stop irreversible damage from climate change. 31 years before we perish for good.
It’s time to formally and historically acknowledge just how badly we are messing with Planet Earth.
Instances of extreme heatwaves could increase. Photo: VALERIE GACHE / Getty Images Just last month, a 34-member panel consisting of eminent scientists of the Anthropocene Working Group (AWG) voted in favor of declaring a new epoch in the history of Earth: Anthropocene—an era when humans have a disproportionate impact on the planet. This new era signals the end of the Holocene Epoch, which began 11,650 years ago.
What is Anthropocene?
The term ‘Anthropocene’ was coined in the year 2000 by Nobel laureate Paul Crutzen and Eugene Stoermer. It refers to the current geological age in which human activity is the dominant influence on the environment. This new geological epoch is defined by human activities that have caused plastic trash overload, carbon emissions, atomic weapons, and industrial smog.
To put it simply, Anthropocene is the time period when humans make a significant impact on Earth’s geology and ecosystem.
But the term goes beyond just climate change and physical changes to the Earth. It also refers to the massive impact we have made on fellow Earthlings. And what an impact we have made!
Why should I worry about climate change?
We have forgotten that we are also a part of the environment. We have used the resources so carelessly that we are not left with anything. Climate change is merely a consequence of our doings. In a few years, we will be gripped with incurable diseases; only then we will realize how important it is to act against climate change.
Will climate change affect the entire ecosystem?
Yes, climate change will not only affect humans but animals and plants as well. We all know that pollution is damaging our lungs severely. Plantable and recyclable products are the only medium that can stop the damage being done to the ecosystem.
What can I do as an individual to prevent the harm being done to the environment?
If you want to contribute to the environment, you can start by taking small steps. Replace plastic and paper products in your house by seed paper bundles. Reduce the use of nonrenewable resources. Use recyclable gifts at ceremonies rather than expensive showpieces.
Can corporate entities contribute to deal with climate change emergencies?
Manufacturers have polluted the environment the most by recklessly exhausting resources. Companies can contribute by making Green promotions, using recyclable packaging for goods, giving seed paper products to employees, and use resources efficiently.
A recent UN report revealed that 1 million species of animals and plants are now facing extinction due to human activity.
- Out of the 8 million animal and plant species on Earth, 1 million are threatened with extinction.
- More than 40% of amphibian species, almost 33% of corals and more than a third of all marine mammals are threatened
- 66% of the marine environment has been significantly altered and 33% marine mammals are threatened with extinction.

The noose is around our neck.
Start By Ensuring Ocean Bound Trash is Converted into Sustainable Products
Should we take this report seriously?
The BNCCR findings may seem alarmist, but the cause for alarm is genuine, the report says. It argues that though the data is there for all to see, bodies like the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) are not projecting the doomsday scenario realistically enough—that they are “erring on the side of least drama”.
“We must never forget that we are in a unique situation with no precise historic analogue. The level of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is now greater, and the Earth warmer than what human beings have ever experienced. And there are almost eight billion of us now living on this planet.”
According to the study, we are marching towards an existential crisis at a much quicker trot than previously thought. It even questions the efficacy of the Paris Agreement that aims to cap global temperature rise to 3-5°C.
That’s bad enough for disaster, the BNCCR says. “…3°C of warming already constitutes an existential risk,” says the study.
The BNCCR claims that a 3°C rise would correspond to a 0.5m rise in sea levels endangering coastal areas around the world.
Photo by jcrosemann / gettyimages Mumbai, Shanghai and other cities at risk
A 3°C rise in temperatures would correspond to a 0.5m rise in sea levels endangering coastal areas around the world. “If climate change was to reach 3°C, most of Bangladesh and Florida would drown, while major coastal cities — Shanghai, Lagos, Mumbai — would be swamped, likely creating large flows of climate refugees,” says the study.
Besides, when temperatures rise more than 3°C, the domino effect that will be hard to roll back. Think no more polar ice caps to reflect the sun’s rays and heat, Arctic permafrost defrosting to release methane into the atmosphere and other such horrendous things that will only make the Earth hotter still. A 4°C rise could annihilate up to 80-90% of the global human population, say the study.
The think-tank estimates that if nothing is done, by 2050 up to 1 billion people currently residing in West Africa and the Middle East will have to relocate because the climate conditions there will make these places unliveable. Other parts of the world will experience more than 20 days of “record-breaking heatwaves and wildfires, more intense flooding and more damaging hurricanes” every year.
“Climate change is now reaching the end-game, where very soon, humanity must choose between taking unprecedented action, or accepting that it has been left too late and bear the consequences.” That’s a chilling warning.
On World Environment Day, we at Pepaa hope that we urgently recognize the impact of human interference, and spread awareness about the reality of the role of mankind in the destruction of Planet Earth.

As Indians, we have been taught to give immense respect and treat our guests well. We were elated to be surrounded by 500 of well wishers on our wedding day. We knew that being enveloped by our strong support system will make this day even more magical. Hence, we desired to do something extra special for them. We didn’t want to join the rat race of every wedding. My partner and I were very clear that sending out boring, meaningless wedding cards along with sweets and dry fruits were not our cup of tea. We wanted our day to be remembered by our loved ones forever.
So, sending out the green wedding cards by Pepaa was the best decision of our lives because they won’t be storing our invitation cards in a dust-filled cupboard. Instead, it will be blooming in their flower garden.

It is a known fact that the population on our planet is increasing at an alarming rate. Over the last twelve years, approximately one billion inhabitants have been added to the world. As of now, the earth is home to a whopping 7 billion inhabitants. Every being that is brought into the world, is born with his own share of likes, dislikes, and preferences. He chooses what he likes and what he doesn’t like. He chooses what products he will use and what he will not.
To meet the demands of this ever-increasing population, innumerous industries worldwide produce massive amounts of commodities everyday. Whether its food and beverage, fashion and beauty, or household, millions of products are produced in all categories.
In this fast-paced age, every human being consumes a plethora of commodities in his life. Can you imagine the amount of packaging generated by all the products each human consumes in his entire lifetime?
What is product packaging made up of, you ask? Here’s our breakdown for the same:
- Plastic: The easiest packaging material out there, approximately 53% of all products are packed using plastic materials.
- Paper: 25% of all goods are packed using paper packaging.
- Glass: A whopping 3.7 million tonnes of glass packaging is produced every year. Glass is used package around 10% of products.
- Aluminium: Approximately 189,000 tonnes of aluminium packaging is used annually worldwide.
- Steel: 13 billion steel cans are produced every year.
Now, out of all these materials, 38% of it in a person cannot be recycled. It is let into landfills and remains on the planet forever. According to environmental reports, packaging creates approximately 29 million tons of non-compostable waste to landfills every year.
Here are a few scarring examples of damaging, destructive and dangerous packaging that will blow your mind!
- The amount of fatal and unhealthy packaging that is thrown away every single year is as good as circling the earth 4 times.
- According to top environmental researchers, the oceans of the earth consist of more plastic and harmful packaging than wildlife. In fact, plastic packaging outnumbers sea life by six items for every one sea animal.
- That’s not all for causing a hazard to the sea, tiny pieces of injurious materials present in the ocean are consumed by innumerable creatures. Due to this, many diverse species of marine animals like sea are gradually getting extinct.
- Have you ever taken your preferred beverages in a disposable packaging on a hasty day? Well, you’re not the only one. Over 25 million people consume coffee and other beverage in plastic/paper cups every single day. Can you imagine all the 25 million cups accumulating as waste every day?
- Plastic Bottles account for one of the most threatening forms of plastic packaging. Over 20,000 plastic bottles are sold every second in the world. Out of this unimaginable amount, only 50% of them are recycled. Not only that, the percentage of bottles that are turned into new packaging is just 7%.

The Roller Coaster Evolution Of A Pencil
A pencil is a daily staple in any home, office, school or business. Whether you’re learning your first alphabets or writing your final exam, you most definitely must have used a pencil at some point in your life.
But have you ever wondered how this thin cylindrical writing object came into existence?
The pioneers of creating this writing tool were the Romans who first came up with the concept. They created a long, thin object out of graphite, which they called a stylus.
Wooden pencils In addition, chalk, as well as slate pencils, were also widely used.
Slate pencilsIt was around the 1500s , when graphite was discovered in a small quaint town in England called Cumbria. It was then that the use of graphite pencils came into being. These pencils were different in shape and structure as compared to the new-age pencils that we use today.
How are Pepaa pencils better than regular pencils?
Pepaa pencils are a hundred times better than regular pencils because they are nature-friendly stationery. They don’t just help you write or draw but also save you from the guilt of killing trees for pencils.
Are Pepaa pencils more sustainable than regular pencils?
Yes, Peppa pencils are more sustainable than regular virgin pencils. The reasons for this is because –
They’re made up of recycled newspaper and used handmade paper.
They’re biodegradable and come with a seed that you can plant. Why are plantable pencils not as common as regular pencils?
Plantable pencils like Peppa are a new invention. For hundreds of years, we have been using virgin pencils that are made of wood pulp. We knew all along that trees had to be cut for our stationery needs, but we had no other option. Now that we have an opportunity, most of the plantable stationery is limited to online stores because plenty of people don’t know about it yet. However, plantable stationery is picking up pace nowadays.
Are Pepaa pencils as good in quality as regular pencils?
Yes. The quality part of Pepaa pencils has been taken care of, throughout the production of these pencils. They are suitable for detailing as well.
Here’s the process of making a pencil.
- Cedar Trees are most popular when it comes to the production of pencils. These cedar trees mature when they reach 14 years of age. At this stage, the wood is ready to be transformed into a pencil. These mature trees are felled and then cut into smaller pieces.
- These smaller logs are sliced and shaped into thin, peaked slats. Next, these slats are treated to make the wood extremely supple and dry. This step is of umpteen importance as it is crucial for shaping the pencil. A well-treated pencil sharpens smoothly and effortlessly.
- The Pencil Slats are also treated with wax in order to create uniformity in the color of the pencils.
- It takes a period of 60 days for the slates to completely dry.
- Once these slats are fit to be turned into pencils, the next step is to create grooves in the slats. A total of nine grooves is carved into each slat in a parallel manner. These grooves provide a base to fit a graphite rod.
- The graphite is held in place firmly with a one of kind glue that is pressed into the grooves.
- The pencil leads are then put in the oven and heated at a temperature of 980 Degrees Celsius. This is another significant step as the extreme heat makes the pencils strong, sturdy and extremely smooth to sharpen and use.
- The graphite and lead rods are then scrunched through the top of the slat on the glue.
- One this step is completed, a new slat is placed and fixed over the first slate. Thus, the graphite lead is sandwiched between the two layers of the pencil slats. This sandwich-like structure is treated with intense heat which is then compressed.
- Extreme pressure is applied to the slat which is ready to be turned into a fresh pencil. Next, the sandwiched slats are cut into 19-centimetre size of a pencil.
- After this, the pencil goes through multiple rounds of painting, coloring, varnishing, and sharpening. And there you have it, A brand-new, smooth pencil.
Coming to some statistics, on an average, about 170,000 pencils are manufactured from a single tree. Can you imagine the number of trees that have been felled to fulfill your requirement of just a single pencil? We live in a world of mindless consumption, where we consume without giving much thought to our natural surroundings. However, this careless consumption could not go on forever. It had to stop. Our ecological environment had to be protected, preserved, nourished and nurtured.
That’s when Pepaa decided to take a step.
A step towards a better tomorrow.
A step towards a greener tomorrow.
A step towards a healthier tomorrow.
A step by which we altered the old school way of creating pencils. We create sustainable, 21st century, modern pencils.

Do We Have A Future Without Our Planet?
Billions and billions of years ago, when God must be creating our Planet Earth…
- Ample of fresh blue water – Check
- Tall, dark, and absolutely luscious green trees- Check
- Natural and pure air – Check
- Acres and acres of seamless clean land – Check
- Precisely enough sunlight – Check
God, truly was endowing on mankind. But, are we really thankful for everything that is granted to us? Maybe not. And, it’s time that we love and appreciate this beautiful planet that we were gifted. The basic rule of a healthy relationship is, when you take something, you must always give something in return. Yet, the alliance with our blue and green globe has been only of accepting everything that comes our way, to the extent, that we have begun destructing the only celestial body designed for our survival. It was made to provide us with food, shelter, and pure air. Unfortunately, today we use it to fulfill all our luxury and comfort needs. But, this is old news. We are all aware of the alarming rate at which our Mother Earth is deteriorating. The real problem is that we are all still in denial. Denial that we do not harm our environment on an individual level.
However, it is now time to clear this misconception:
Do you use paper?
Do you use plastic bags?
Do you use pencils?
If your answer to any or all of the above questions is ‘YES’ then you are equally responsible for the condition of our planet today. Why you may ask? Well, let’s start with paper. The thin crisp sheets of papers that we use on a daily basis are formed from shedding down thousands and thousands of trees. Sometimes huge acres of forest land are wiped out just to satisfy the endless paper demand. Even in this electronic age, the need for paper hasn’t subsided. In fact, has increased manifold. An extremely terrifying and shocking number of 2.47 million trees are cut down every day just for paper. Paper, which was used once and thrown away.
The sad part is that most of the times unused paper is treated as scrap. Children in schools, colleges, and other institutions use infinite paper every day. Paper is a constant element in the life of professionals like lawyers, doctors, and architects. The sole reason multinational companies function today is due to Paper. Countless numbers of thin sheets of papers are used every day, in every industry, at every home, and by every individual. Do you still believe that you do nothing to harm the planet? A simple piece of paper has the power to destroy our Earth forever.
What are recycled paper pencils?
Recycled paper pencils are a blessing to our planet, honestly. Every year, millions of trees had to be cut down in order to provide us with pencils. In no way was this ethical. That’s why recycled paper pencils came to the rescue. They’re made from recycled newspapers. Plantable seeds come packed with these pencils.
What are handmade paper bags?
Handmade paper bags, as the name suggests, are handmade bags made out of recycled paper. They are strong but pretty as well. These bags are designed with a vision to discourage the use of plastic bags which are toxic to the environment.
What are plantable seed papers?
Plantable seed papers are handmade papers made from paper and textile waste. They’re infused with seeds that you can plant in soil once you have used the paper. These seeds will grow into plants and trees if watered regularly.
Where can I find these?
The one-stop solution to all your eco-friendly stationery needs is Pepaa. We are an online store that cares about the planet, and it is quite evident in all our products. Our only aim is to benefit the environment, instead of exploiting it.
Pencils- The most fond memories for anybody are their childhood ones. Where they scribbled and doodled their way to adulthood. Growing up lead pencils, colour pencils, velvet pencils have created a permanent mark on our lives, but also on the life of our Planet. A pencil’s best friend is paper. Just like paper it follows the same faith. Carries with it the guilt of a million trees that were killed to give the pencil a life.
Plastic Bags- Nature’s most feared enemy. Polythene is the main element used in manufacturing plastic bags. Countries across the globe have time and again banned products that incorporate this harmful substance that we so carelessly use. We are so accustomed to using plastic that we cannot avoid them even, on small trips to the supermarket or street shopping.
Did You Know- Plastic is the only material that never decomposes? And, even if it has one shot at partially decomposing it will be after 200-400 years. So, every single plastic bag that you’ve used till date is lying somewhere on the surface of the Earth, polluting our environment.
‘Unity is Strength.’ It’s time we stand united together with our Planet on this war against all products that are causing irreparable harm to it. Starting with the basic necessities.
Pepaa is here to provide you with plenty of alternate options, which are fancier and sustainable and eco-friendly at the same time.
For instance, Pepaa’s team develops smooth textured paper by recycling the endless paper available in every household and office. To top this, they even infuse this fine quality paper with seeds. So, when you are done using the paper, you can actually let it blossom into a beautiful flower plant with adequate water and sunlight. What a beautiful way to give back to nature! At Pepaa, pencils too, are made from recycled paper and can also be planted as they come along with seeds. To replace plastic bags, Pepaa has come up with an apt solution.
