Botanical Paper Works Magic! 4 Steps to Make It!

Why is Botanical Paper Important?
Botanical paper works magic! Since centuries, wood has been the backbone of the paper making industry. A large portion of forest cover is cleared every day in order to meet paper and paper product requirements. Softwood coniferous trees such as spruce and pine are common natural resources that are manufactured into paper.

The primary effect of this mindless production of paper is deforestation. In addition, it also leads to accumulation of large scale paper waste in landfills. Today, paper pollution produced at an alarming rate from all sectors of the society has proved to be a serious ecological concern.

As years passed by, masses started becoming more aware of the consequences that constant tree felling had on the planet. This increasing awareness of negative repercussions led to the boom of more mindful and ethical choices. Thus, audiences began switching to products that were more sustainable and created minimum impact on the resources of the earth.
In terms of the paper making industry, handmade paper started becoming more popular. This kind of paper is made by shredding old, used and unused paper and then handmaking it into new paper. This method was driven by the concept of zero waste which was practised widely by environmentalists.

In spite of all these efforts, only 5% of the paper that is made worldwide is made from waste. The rest of the 95% still depends on wood pulp, which means continued felling on innocent trees.

But is there a way that we can save our luscious forest cover without compromising on our paper requirements? Yes, there is!
Pepaa takes immense pride in bringing an unusual yet incredible type of paper to India. Its 100% handmade, recycled, organic, biodegradable. To add to that, it’s even plantable. Yes, you heard us right. Its plantable. We call it Seed Paper or Botanical Paper.

How is Botanical Paper made?
All the paper waste that leads to paper pollution is embraced with open arms by Pepaa. Every last bit of this paper waste is turned into beautiful handmade and recycled paper. This paper is naturally off white in color and has an extremely fine looking, earthy texture. If off white is not your color, worry not. Our eco friendly botanical paper can be dyed into a range of nature friendly water based colors. Thus, all our materials and activities promote the message of zero waste and sustainability.

But making a product out of waste wasn’t our only goal. We believed in doing our bit for the deteriorating nature. We believed in giving back to our selfless planet. We believed in filling the world with fresh, green saplings that grow into tall, strong trees. And we wanted to do exactly that.

We achieved this by embedding hand picked seeds into the botanical paper. These seeds enabled the organic paper to return back into mother earth in the form of magical plants.

Does botanical paper really work?
Botanical paper is paper with seeds embedded in it – as simple as that! Does it really work? Absolutely! Plant it in the same way you plant seeds – the paper will turn into sludge and decompose, and the seeds will grow into plants! The equation is really simple: More seed paper – less paper waste, and more flowers/vegetables for the environment.
What is plantable seed paper, i.e., botanical paper?
Plantable Seed Paper is a biodegradable eco-paper that is made with post-consumer textile wastes (yes, made from cotton and not virgin paper – so no trees harmed!) and embedded with exotic seeds of flowers and vegetables (sometimes even trees!). When the paper is planted in a pot of soil, the seeds grow and the paper decomposes and forms manure.
How long does Botanical Seed Paper last?
Botanical paper can grow even if 5 or 6 years old, but typically the germination rates start to decline after 3 or 4 years. However, at Pepaa, we recommend that you use the plantable seed paper within one year of purchase. Keeping the seed paper in a cool place will improve germination capacity rather than keeping it in a hot environment.
How to Make Botanical Paper?
Step 1: Gather Paper or Post-Consumer Textile Wastes, and put it into a blender.
Step 2: Pour some water and blend it into pulp.
Step 3: Put some seeds into the pulp, stir and strain the mix.
Step 4: Spread the pulp onto a mesh, flatten it and then keep it out to dry.
Step 5: Your plantable seed paper is ready for use!
How to plant the botanical paper?
1.Soak the seed paper overnight, or for 2-3 days.
2.Let the seeds sprout.
3.Cut the plantable seed paper into pieces and then cover with soil (1cm deep).
