Don’t read this article about plantable seed paper please! The planet is in danger.

    Did you know?

    Paper comes from Trees.

No, we are not being sarcastic but are truly intrigued of whether we are aware of this important fact. It seems like even after knowing that every piece of paper costs us one tree, we still pretend to be oblivious to it. And, the facts mentioned below will prove our point:

    • The average office worker uses approximately 10,000 sheets of paper per year, out of which 45 percent of the paper ends up in the trash bin.
    • Paper accounts for up to 71.6 million tons of waste per year
    • The production of one kilogram of paper requires 324 litres of water.

You probably didn’t realise the disastrous impact you were causing while tossing that unwanted sheet of paper in the garbage bin. That’s alright to some extent. But now when you are a 100% aware of the consequences of your actions and take no step to curb the wastage, that’s when the real problem arises. In spite of knowing all the threatening effects of our consumption and our disposal, we turn a deaf ear to our mother nature.

Is this really the behaviour our planet deserves?

Can I use seed paper to print wedding invitations?

Yes, they can be used to print wedding invitation cards. The best way to a green wedding is to reduce the wastage that is produced during the ceremony. By printing cards on seed paper, you can reduce the usage of paper and send a positive message.

What can all plants be grown from seed paper products?

Seed paper products are not regular pencils, pens, pocket notes, and wedding cards. Unlike regular products, they can be planted after use. Different types of seeds are mixed in the material so that a variety of plants can be grown.

In what ways can I use seed paper in packaging the products to sell?

The manufacturers can bring out a new change by using seed paper for packaging goods. It is a well-known fact that paper and polythene are extensively used for product packaging. This can reduce wastage as well as usage of paper.

  • Botanical Paper Works Magic! 4 Steps to Make It!

Botanical Paper Works Magic! 4 Steps to Make It!

    Why is Botanical Paper Important?

Botanical paper works magic! Since centuries, wood has been the backbone of the paper making industry. A large portion of forest cover is cleared every day in order to meet paper and paper product requirements. Softwood coniferous trees such as spruce and pine are common natural resources that are manufactured into paper.

The primary effect of this mindless production of paper is deforestation. In addition, it also leads to accumulation of large scale paper waste in landfills. Today, paper pollution produced at an alarming rate from all sectors of the society has proved to be a serious ecological concern.

As years passed by, masses started becoming more aware of the consequences that constant tree felling had on the planet. This increasing awareness of negative repercussions led to the boom of more mindful and ethical choices. Thus, audiences began switching to products that were more sustainable and created minimum impact on the resources of the earth.

In terms of the paper making industry, handmade paper started becoming more popular. This kind of paper is made by shredding old, used and unused paper and then handmaking it into new paper. This method was driven by the concept of zero waste which was practised widely by environmentalists.

Pepaa makes hand made paper products. Shop here

In spite of all these efforts, only 5% of the paper that is made worldwide is made from waste. The rest of the 95% still depends on wood pulp, which means continued felling on innocent trees.

But is there a way that we can save our luscious forest cover without compromising on our paper requirements? Yes, there is!

Pepaa takes immense pride in bringing an unusual yet incredible type of paper to India. Its 100% handmade, recycled, organic, biodegradable. To add to that, it’s even plantable. Yes, you heard us right. Its plantable. We call it Seed Paper or Botanical Paper.

    How is Botanical Paper made?

All the paper waste that leads to paper pollution is embraced with open arms by Pepaa. Every last bit of this paper waste is turned into beautiful handmade and recycled paper. This paper is naturally off white in color and has an extremely fine looking, earthy texture. If off white is not your color, worry not. Our eco friendly botanical paper can be dyed into a range of nature friendly water based colors. Thus, all our materials and activities promote the message of zero waste and sustainability.

But making a product out of waste wasn’t our only goal. We believed in doing our bit for the deteriorating nature. We believed in giving back to our selfless planet. We believed in filling the world with fresh, green saplings that grow into tall, strong trees. And we wanted to do exactly that.

We achieved this by embedding hand picked seeds into the botanical paper. These seeds enabled the organic paper to return back into mother earth in the form of magical plants.

    Does botanical paper really work?

Botanical paper is paper with seeds embedded in it – as simple as that! Does it really work? Absolutely! Plant it in the same way you plant seeds – the paper will turn into sludge and decompose, and the seeds will grow into plants! The equation is really simple: More seed paper – less paper waste, and more flowers/vegetables for the environment.

What is plantable seed paper, i.e., botanical paper?

Plantable Seed Paper is a biodegradable eco-paper that is made with post-consumer textile wastes (yes, made from cotton and not virgin paper – so no trees harmed!) and embedded with exotic seeds of flowers and vegetables (sometimes even trees!). When the paper is planted in a pot of soil, the seeds grow and the paper decomposes and forms manure.

How long does Botanical Seed Paper last?

Botanical paper can grow even if 5 or 6 years old, but typically the germination rates start to decline after 3 or 4 years. However, at Pepaa, we recommend that you use the plantable seed paper within one year of purchase. Keeping the seed paper in a cool place will improve germination capacity rather than keeping it in a hot environment.

    How to Make Botanical Paper?

Step 1: Gather Paper or Post-Consumer Textile Wastes, and put it into a blender.
Step 2: Pour some water and blend it into pulp.
Step 3: Put some seeds into the pulp, stir and strain the mix.
Step 4: Spread the pulp onto a mesh, flatten it and then keep it out to dry.
Step 5: Your plantable seed paper is ready for use!

How to plant the botanical paper?

1.Soak the seed paper overnight, or for 2-3 days.
    2.Let the seeds sprout.
3.Cut the plantable seed paper into pieces and then cover with soil (1cm deep).
    4.Water it every day.
5.In a few days, depending on the weather and the season, you’ll see how the plants sprout and begin to grow into exotic plants.
6.Place it in a window, or in the great outdoors.

  • A Story of Paper – By Paper

A Story of Paper – By Paper

Today, I am found in every part of the world. I play an important role in every individual’s life. I am known to be the best secret-keeper. I am the one, who holds thousands of sad and happy thoughts, ideas, memories, and feelings. Sometimes, I even become the bearer of anger and aggression. I have always been loyal and faithful to my different owners. And, every person finds different and creative uses of me. But most importantly,  I am someone, you cannot do without.

    Who am I?

    Paper.

The smooth, crisp sheet of paper you use every day for various reasons, is me. Since the time I was manufactured you and your human kind has used me in several ways. I have listened to and understood more than a trillion words that were written on me. So today, it’s my turn. Today, I will talk and you will listen.

Let’s start with where I come from:

Just like you, I’m immensely proud of my parents. I love and adore them. A child is provided with the best things in the world, only because of the endless sacrifices made by their parents. And, like any other parent, my dear ones sacrificed themselves to bring me in this world. My parents are none other than, TREES. I am made from many softwood trees like spruce, pine, fir, larch, and hemlock, as well as hardwood trees like eucalyptus, poplar, aspen, and birch.

Now that my parents are established, let’s find out my purpose of existence.

Well, to simply put I was made for you. To make your life easy. My basic duty is to make all forms of communication around the world clear and effortless. Me, my brothers and sisters are available in so many forms and in so many different places. Some of us are attached in an infant’s drawing book, some in school note books and text books, some in a young boy or girl’s personal diary, some in important client documents, accounts and legal work. We are almost there everywhere. And we are produced in enormous amounts each day to meet this growing demand. We really are very happy to assist you and be your support in good and bad times. We cherish every moment that you all spend with us. We love the tenderness of a baby’s hand while colouring, enjoy the long nights of studying with different students, and embrace the countless information written and discussed over us across multiple fields,  whether it’s architecture, medical, finance or law.

But sadly, there is something I regret too.

Since decades now, my siblings and I feel that we aren’t treated well. Our worth is not valued amongst the mankind. Primarily, we hate the aspect that our parents- Trees are mercilessly slaughtered for us. Apart from that, we have realised that once our work with you is done we are thrown away in garbage without giving a second thought. After serving my owner for years, you may find me in dust bins, roads, and sometimes even used to serve you delicious chaat and bhel and as a napkin to wipe your hands.

There is nothing we can do unless our owners learn to respect us. We have accepted our faith.

But, recently we see a difference.  We see a better future, not just for us but for you too. Bringing a new ray of hope, companies like Pepaa are creating miracles in this over using world of paper. Pepaa, has come up with new, alternate and sustainable solutions for every paper present on this globe today. Pepaa is here, to put an end to the brutal killing of around 7 billion trees each year. Our parents are now safe and will live a long and healthy life, all thanks to Pepaa.

What does Pepaa do differently to save us?

Pepaa, also provides paper to companies and individuals. But the paper it provides is different.

It delivers handmade and recycled paper. So all of us lying around in garbage, get a new life because of Pepaa. The team of Pepaa delicately prepares us with love and care. I finally feel valued and adored. Pepaa, also infuses high quality seeds in many papers. So when the user is done with our work, he or she doesn’t need to throw us in garbage. But instead, they can bloom me into a beautiful marigold, tomato or a chili plant. All they need to do is plant me in good quality soil and nourish me with enough water and sunlight. A few days after I will decompose in the soil, but the seeds that were infused in me will see the light of a new day, swaying away in cool air

How is the demand for virgin paper dangerous for the planet?

For decades, we have been stripping our planet of its trees for various reasons. One of these reasons happens to be paper. Virgin paper is derived from the wood pulp of certain trees. These trees used to be quite common to find. Not anymore, though, all thanks to the mindless deforestation.

What can be done to help the present scenario?

To help the present scenario, the single-use virgin paper should be avoided. It should be replaced by an eco-friendly version of paper like the plantable seed paper by Pepaa.

    What is plantable paper?

Plantable seed paper or the botanical paper is made from recycling paper and textile wastes. They are biodegradable and handmade. The best part is that seeds of various fruits and flowers are embedded in this sustainable product. So, Pepaa will help paper go back to its natural form.

    How is plantable paper planted?

After using the paper, soak it in water overnight.
Next morning, cut wet the paper into small pieces.
Plant these small pieces of paper in soil.
Water them regularly and let them see the sun.
These seeds will grow up to be plants or trees.

  • Top 10 ways to reduce paper waste at office

Top 10 ways to reduce paper waste at office

Did you know that 50% of wastage in businesses consists of paper? You would agree, wouldn’t you?

Let that sink in for a moment. 50%(!) – Half of all wastes produced in a business – is paper!

Paper accounts for 25% of landfill waste and 32% of municipal waste. We think of plastic as a huge pollutant, but so is paper.

Today, people are becoming more and more conscious and aware of the choices they make and the impact their choices have on our surroundings. People are adopting a greener way of living not only for their own benefit but also for the conservation of the natural habitat.

An eco- friendly lifestyle is not just limited to your home or wedding. Have you considered reducing your environmental footprint at your workplace?

If you’re looking for some inspiration to make a difference, get started with this guide to do your bit.

Here are our top 10 ways to create a sustainable environment and reduce paper wastage in your

    1. Think before you print

There are tons and tons of documents we print that we don’t even need. All of us have unnecessary documents lying around. So the next time, just before you click the Print button, take a moment and think, Do you actually need that piece of paper to be printed?

There are still countless examples of employees continuing to print documents when it is likely unnecessary: for manual filing, when copies already exist, or for getting a signature. Think email, and DigiLocker solutions, or PDF tools with electronic signature capabilities, please

    1. Go digital

Let’s be a little tech-savvy and go digital. It not only saves paper and reduces waste, but also serves as a more secure and protected medium of storing documents. Electronically stored documents can be more guarded as compared to a traditionally locked cupboard. Not convinced yet? Well, it’s easy to store and locate as you don’t have to look through piles and piles as paper filled documents. What’s more is that they take up no space at all.

To go completely paper-free and to ensure that all your document processes are digital, you can also ask that all your clients or suppliers to send documents, bills or invoices in an electronic form.

    1. Recycle

The best way to reduce paper waste is to recycle it instead of disposing it. It might sound like a difficult task but we completely disagree. Segregate paper from other trash. Shred the paper waste, add water and dry it to make your own, brand new, earthy-like paper.

And besides, recycling 1 ton of paper saves 682 gallons of oil, 26,500 gallons of water and over 17 trees. Surprised, aren’t you?

Pepaa Manufactures Exquisite Products from Upcycled Paper Waste!

    Look at Pepaa’s Upcycled Products

    1. Reuse paper

Most people print on one-side of the paper and throw it away immediately once they don’t need it anymore. However, little do we realise is that one side of the paper is still empty and waiting to be used and written upon. This completely functional side of paper can also used for more printing – or for doodling, sketching or jotting down some important points. The intention – if you see a white space on a paper, try filling it up.

Think of the sq.ft of paper to be as costly as a sq.ft in Mumbai – and you will never waste another inch again. 🙂

    1. Print on both sides of the paper

Print double sided as much you can. People might cringe at the thought of this but trust us, the earth will definitely thank you for saving paper. You can easily select this action from your printers settings and Voila! Your purpose is fulfilled while fighting paper pollution. Set all your computers, printers, and all other devices to print double-sided by default.

If you are unsure how to set your computer/printer to print on both sides of the paper, read this guide here.

    1. Reduce Margins, Fonts, Headers and Footers
This can save considerable amounts of paper waste. How many times have we been guilty of huge font sizes, margins the size of Howrah Bridge, and footers and headers that take up more space than the body of the document? A simple click of the Preview button before you hit that Print button can save dozens of paper waste, surely!
    1. Eliminate the use of paper towels

Believe it or not, a major source of paper pollution in businesses is paper towels and tissues. Generally, people hastily use tissues without paying attention to their quantity of consumption. Replace your paper towels with effective air dryers and water systems. Cloth towels can also be an eco friendly substitute.

    1. Stop using Paper Plates and Paper Cutlery

Using disposable cutlery at events or even on a daily basis at work can be threatening for the environment. Instead, switch to the basic steel or glass based cutlery. This will save you tons of money as well as garbage. And besides, it would also give your delicious food a very homely vibe. Now who wouldn’t want that?

    1. Use recycled paper Business cards

This would be an extremely useful tip to taking a sustainable step at work. Use recycled tree-free paper to print your business or visiting cards. It’s great for the environment and would instantly convey your eco friendly ethics to any receiver. Good or good?

Better Yet, What If Your Business Card Can Be Planted and You Can Grow Flowers and Vegetables?

Is That Really Possible? I Want Them!

    1. Re-check your document before printing

How many times have we realised grammatical errors and spelling mistakes after printing a document? Check a document thoroughly before you actually click on the print option. It will save you many resources like paper, ink, money and time!

Conserving paper in the office is a very important step for the future of the planet. Let’s be eco-conscious and do our bit.Taking a step towards sustainability and making a contribution will not only bolster your corporate image and local reputation, but will also lead to minimization of paper waste on a large scale. Let’s save the paper to save the planet!

What are your ways in which you reduce paper waste in your office? Let us know in the comments below.

How can I identify the amount of paper waste in my office?

Corporate firms produce the most amount of paper waste that is dumped in landfills outside the city. This does not only contaminate the environment but becomes expensive for the office as well. You can identify if your office is producing an excessive amount of paper garbage by looking at the daily workings.

Is there a means through which I can reduce the office's paper waste?

There are several ways that can be used to reduce the usage of paper. We often print irresponsibly. Several copies of documents are made that are circulated among the employees. Using digital platforms instead of using paper is the best way to be eco-friendly

Can recycling and reusing paper help to reduce paper waste?

Yes, it can. Recycling reusing and reducing paper waste is the best option to be environment-friendly. You can use plantable pencils for the office stationery instead of plastic pens, which are non-biodegradable. Seed paper notes can be used in meetings to note down the minutes.

What can I use instead of paper products in the office?

Recyclable and plantable products can reduce the use of paper. Print on both sides of the paper product, utilize business cards made from plantable paper, use the digital medium more often to circulate the documents. By taking these steps, you can reduce paper waste in your office.
