Step By Step Guide To Making Paper Bags From Newspaper

There is always a lot of clutter in our house in the form of old newspapers. Several people sell them away to petty hawkers, while others throw them wherever. It is true that the condition of the environment and ecosystem is deteriorating day by day. Excessive use of resources is creating an urgent need for sustainability

Recycling, reusing, and reducing the use of resources is the only way forward. Here is a step by step guide on how to make paper bags from the newspaper.

    Get some old newspapers

The first step that you need to do is to collect the material required for making paper bags. Old newspapers are the best way to make paper bags because they create zero waste. You will also need a pair of scissors, adhesive glue, ropes, and colors. You can also use pages from old diaries and registers, which are of no use.

    Fold and Glue the papers

First of all, the papers must be folded over each other and then glued together. This ensures that the paper is made strong enough to carry material inside it. The sheet of paper must be folded horizontally from both sides. Glue the ends of this sheet.

    Add a layer for base

The most important part of a paper bag is its base. You can use cardboard if you need a firm base, or you can fold the newspaper backward from both ends. Corners must be folded in a triangular manner and then glued with the adhesive to seal the base.

    Fold after sealing

Once the base has been sealed, you can proceed to the next step. Fold the bag towards the middle from both ends to create space inside. It is vital to make resistance in your bag; otherwise, it will not be able to hold things inside. This has to be done by making accordion folds at both sides of the bag.

    Punch holes at open ends

A lot of paper bags made from a newspaper cannot hold. To make your make easy to carry, punch two holes at equal distance on either side of the bag. You can use a pen to make holes if you do not have a punching machine. Take a rope and pass it through the adjacent holes to form a loop. Do the same on the other side as well.

    Adds designs from newspapers

Who said paper bags always have to be boring? You can add beautiful designs to your paper bag made from old newspapers. Make flowers, rings, and other patterns to make them look attractive. You can also add embellishments in the form of laces and crafts or just color the entire paper bag with poster colors.

Paper bags are a great way to live a sustainable lifestyle. It is important to declutter your home from time to time. Every time you find newspapers taking up space in your storeroom, make paper bags. One newspaper is capable of being converted into two paper bags if used efficiently.

Sustainability is the need of the hour. If we don’t take the responsibility of saving the ecosystem and making it an environment-friendly place to live in, we are harming our future generations. Use this guide to make paper bags from old newspapers and promote sustainable development

Here’s How To Make Paper Bags That Help Save The Earth

The earth is dying, and with every plastic bag that you buy and throw into your dustbin, you add more fuel to the fire. In just a matter of four decades, since the invention of single-use plastic bags in 1979, the entire earth itself has been transformed into a plastic stuffed ball.

Do you know that plastic was actually invented to save the environment? Leo Hendrik Baekeland, in 1907, was a proud inventor of something that was not only reusable but also durable. In fact, it was also not made out of natural resources but human-made chemicals. However, never in his wildest dreams had he imagined that a simple upgrade in his invention would screw it all up and take a toll over our planet in such a destructive way.

Keep reading to know why it is imperative to switch to paper bags and how you can make some for yourself just by following a few simple steps.

    Single-use plastic: The ubiquitous monster

No matter how convenient life has been made with the invention of plastics, the hazards can never be overshadowed. The inability of landfill bacteria to digest plastic components is the worst part of the plastic.

It takes about 600 years for a plastic bag to break down into smaller particles, and those are even more harmful than the whole plastic.

Do you realize that the first plastic bag that was invented is still present on earth, deep under some landfill, the sea bed, or inside the stomach of a large fish?

Step by step process to DIY a paper bag

Follow these simple steps to know how to make paper bags:

    • Take a rectangular-shaped sheet of paper of referred dimensions 19×33 inches.
    • Fold both the shorter sides of the paper up 3 inches and crease the fold. For better understanding, let’s name these two folds as fold 1 and fold 2.
    • Make two more creases, each at a distance of 15 inches from the shorter edges. Let this central, 3 inches wide part be fold 3.
    • Now, fold one of the longer sides 3 inches up and make 3 inches long cuts on all the creases of fold 1, 2, and 3 that fall on this fourth fold.
    • Paste fold 1 on fold 2 and the overlapping parts of fold 4 on each other.
    • Now take a cardboard piece and cut out a 3×12 inches rectangle. Paste this at the bottom of the bag. This cardboard will provide some amount of sturdiness and strength to the bag.
    • Take a pair of strings, each about 5-6 inches long, and paste them on the open end of the bag from inside at the place of a handle.

And voila! Your reusable handmade handbag is ready!

The different ways in which you can use paper bags

Who says that paper bags are just meant to hold things? If made out of decorative sheets, they make excellent decor pieces.

You can make small paper bags out of different sheets of decorative papers and place them on a table or inside a sheer almirah or even hang on the wall. This beautiful storage item is sure to add aesthetic to the mood of your home.

  • The Roller Coaster Evolution Of A Pencil

A pencil is a daily staple in any home, office, school or business. Whether you’re learning your first alphabets or writing your final exam, you most definitely must have used a pencil at some point in your life.

But have you ever wondered how this thin cylindrical writing object came into existence?

The pioneers of creating this writing tool were the Romans who first came up with the concept. They created a long, thin object out of graphite, which they called a stylus.

    Wooden pencils

In addition, chalk, as well as slate pencils, were also widely used.

    Slate pencils

It was around the 1500s , when graphite was discovered in a small quaint town in England called Cumbria. It was then that the use of graphite pencils came into being. These pencils were different in shape and structure as compared to the new-age pencils that we use today.

How are Pepaa pencils better than regular pencils?

Pepaa pencils are a hundred times better than regular pencils because they are nature-friendly stationery. They don’t just help you write or draw but also save you from the guilt of killing trees for pencils
Are Pepaa pencils more sustainable than regular pencils?
Yes, Peppa pencils are more sustainable than regular virgin pencils. The reasons for this is because –
They’re made up of recycled newspaper and used handmade paper
They’re biodegradable and come with a seed that you can plant.

Why are plantable pencils not as common as regular pencils?

Plantable pencils like Peppa are a new invention. For hundreds of years, we have been using virgin pencils that are made of wood pulp. We knew all along that trees had to be cut for our stationery needs, but we had no other option. Now that we have an opportunity, most of the plantable stationery is limited to online stores because plenty of people don’t know about it yet. However, plantable stationery is picking up pace nowadays.

Are Pepaa pencils as good in quality as regular pencils?

Yes. The quality part of Pepaa pencils has been taken care of, throughout the production of these pencils. They are suitable for detailing as well.

Here’s the process of making a pencil.

    • Cedar Trees are most popular when it comes to the production of pencils. These cedar trees mature when they reach 14 years of age. At this stage, the wood is ready to be transformed into a pencil. These mature trees are felled and then cut into smaller pieces.
    • These smaller logs are sliced and shaped into thin, peaked slats. Next, these slats are treated to make the wood extremely supple and dry. This step is of umpteen importance as it is crucial for shaping the pencil. A well-treated pencil sharpens smoothly and effortlessly.
    • The Pencil Slats are also treated with wax in order to create uniformity in the color of the pencils.
    • It takes a period of 60 days for the slates to completely dry.
    • Once these slats are fit to be turned into pencils, the next step is to create grooves in the slats. A total of nine grooves is carved into each slat in a parallel manner. These grooves provide a base to fit a graphite rod.
    • The graphite is held in place firmly with a one of kind glue that is pressed into the grooves.
    • The pencil leads are then put in the oven and heated at a temperature of 980 Degrees Celsius. This is another significant step as the extreme heat makes the pencils strong, sturdy and extremely smooth to sharpen and use.
    • The graphite and lead rods are then scrunched through the top of the slat on the glue.
    • One this step is completed, a new slat is placed and fixed over the first slate. Thus, the graphite lead is sandwiched between the two layers of the pencil slats. This sandwich-like structure is treated with intense heat which is then compressed.
    • Extreme pressure is applied to the slat which is ready to be turned into a fresh pencil. Next, the sandwiched slats are cut into 19-centimetre size of a pencil.
    • After this, the pencil goes through multiple rounds of painting, coloring, varnishing, and sharpening. And there you have it, A brand-new, smooth pencil.

Coming to some statistics, on an average, about 170,000 pencils are manufactured from a single tree. Can you imagine the number of trees that have been felled to fulfill your requirement of just a single pencil? We live in a world of mindless consumption, where we consume without giving much thought to our natural surroundings. However, this careless consumption could not go on forever. It had to stop. Our ecological environment had to be protected, preserved, nourished and nurtured.

That’s when Pepaa decided to take a step.

A step towards a better tomorrow.

A step towards a greener tomorrow.

A step towards a healthier tomorrow.

A step by which we altered the old school way of creating pencils.  We create sustainable, 21st century, modern pencils.

A Story of Paper – By Paper

Today, I am found in every part of the world. I play an important role in every individual’s life. I am known to be the best secret-keeper. I am the one, who holds thousands of sad and happy thoughts, ideas, memories, and feelings. Sometimes, I even become the bearer of anger and aggression. I have always been loyal and faithful to my different owners. And, every person finds different and creative uses of me. But most importantly,  I am someone, you cannot do without.

    Who am I?

    Paper.

The smooth, crisp sheet of paper you use every day for various reasons, is me. Since the time I was manufactured you and your human kind has used me in several ways. I have listened to and understood more than a trillion words that were written on me. So today, it’s my turn. Today, I will talk and you will listen.

Let’s start with where I come from:

Just like you, I’m immensely proud of my parents. I love and adore them. A child is provided with the best things in the world, only because of the endless sacrifices made by their parents. And, like any other parent, my dear ones sacrificed themselves to bring me in this world. My parents are none other than, TREES. I am made from many softwood trees like spruce, pine, fir, larch, and hemlock, as well as hardwood trees like eucalyptus, poplar, aspen, and birch.

Now that my parents are established, let’s find out my purpose of existence.

Well, to simply put I was made for you. To make your life easy. My basic duty is to make all forms of communication around the world clear and effortless. Me, my brothers and sisters are available in so many forms and in so many different places. Some of us are attached in an infant’s drawing book, some in school note books and text books, some in a young boy or girl’s personal diary, some in important client documents, accounts and legal work. We are almost there everywhere. And we are produced in enormous amounts each day to meet this growing demand. We really are very happy to assist you and be your support in good and bad times. We cherish every moment that you all spend with us. We love the tenderness of a baby’s hand while colouring, enjoy the long nights of studying with different students, and embrace the countless information written and discussed over us across multiple fields,  whether it’s architecture, medical, finance or law.

But sadly, there is something I regret too.

Since decades now, my siblings and I feel that we aren’t treated well. Our worth is not valued amongst the mankind. Primarily, we hate the aspect that our parents- Trees are mercilessly slaughtered for us. Apart from that, we have realised that once our work with you is done we are thrown away in garbage without giving a second thought. After serving my owner for years, you may find me in dust bins, roads, and sometimes even used to serve you delicious chaat and bhel and as a napkin to wipe your hands.

There is nothing we can do unless our owners learn to respect us. We have accepted our faith.

But, recently we see a difference.  We see a better future, not just for us but for you too. Bringing a new ray of hope, companies like Pepaa are creating miracles in this over using world of paper. Pepaa, has come up with new, alternate and sustainable solutions for every paper present on this globe today. Pepaa is here, to put an end to the brutal killing of around 7 billion trees each year. Our parents are now safe and will live a long and healthy life, all thanks to Pepaa.

What does Pepaa do differently to save us?

Pepaa, also provides paper to companies and individuals. But the paper it provides is different.

It delivers handmade and recycled paper. So all of us lying around in garbage, get a new life because of Pepaa. The team of Pepaa delicately prepares us with love and care. I finally feel valued and adored. Pepaa, also infuses high quality seeds in many papers. So when the user is done with our work, he or she doesn’t need to throw us in garbage. But instead, they can bloom me into a beautiful marigold, tomato or a chili plant. All they need to do is plant me in good quality soil and nourish me with enough water and sunlight. A few days after I will decompose in the soil, but the seeds that were infused in me will see the light of a new day, swaying away in cool air

How is the demand for virgin paper dangerous for the planet?

For decades, we have been stripping our planet of its trees for various reasons. One of these reasons happens to be paper. Virgin paper is derived from the wood pulp of certain trees. These trees used to be quite common to find. Not anymore, though, all thanks to the mindless deforestation.

What can be done to help the present scenario?

To help the present scenario, the single-use virgin paper should be avoided. It should be replaced by an eco-friendly version of paper like the plantable seed paper by Pepaa.

    What is plantable paper?

Plantable seed paper or the botanical paper is made from recycling paper and textile wastes. They are biodegradable and handmade. The best part is that seeds of various fruits and flowers are embedded in this sustainable product. So, Pepaa will help paper go back to its natural form.

    How is plantable paper planted?

After using the paper, soak it in water overnight.
Next morning, cut wet the paper into small pieces.
Plant these small pieces of paper in soil.
Water them regularly and let them see the sun.
These seeds will grow up to be plants or trees.
